Their Story
Margaret Elizabeth Thompson was born on 15th August 1945 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Manchester, England. She was the daughter of William Thompson and Dorothy Hayes. Her father worked as a coal miner in Wigan.
Margaret attended Wigan Grammar School and excelled in mathematics. In 1963, she won a scholarship to study at the University of Liverpool, where she graduated with honors in 1966.
She met her future husband, David Chen, at a dance in Liverpool in early 1967. David had emigrated from Hong Kong to study engineering. They married on 22nd June 1968 at St. Peter’s Church, Liverpool.
The couple moved to Leeds in 1969 when David secured a position at Leeds Technical College. Their first child, Sarah Elizabeth Chen, was born in 1970 in Leeds. Their son James David Chen was born on 3rd March 1973 at Leeds General Infirmary. Their youngest daughter,
Emily Margaret Chen, was born in 1976.
Margaret worked as a mathematics teacher at Roundhay School throughout the 1970s and 1980s. She retired in 2005 after 30 years of dedicated service to education.
David and Margaret celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2018 surrounded by their children and grandchildren. Margaret passed away peacefully on 12th November 2023 in Leeds, Yorkshire, England, at the age of 78.
